Who Can Run.
What It Pays.
A guide to elected municipal offices in Hollister. City offices are different from San Benito County offices. Figures below distinguish municipal-code salary rates from reported compensation and benefits.
PAY & BENEFITS: READ THE SOURCE YEARUnder the municipal code, city councilmembers receive $820 per month beginning with the November 2024 election; the mayor receives an additional $200 per month. Actual W-2 wages and employer retirement/health contributions may differ. The State Controller's 2024 City Council department report includes nine positions, not just the five elected council seats, so its department-wide benefits total must not be represented as a per-councilmember benefit.

Benefits beyond elected-official salaries
The State Controller's 2024 report lists $28,631 in total wages and $146,427 in employer retirement and health contributions for the nine positions grouped under the Hollister City Council department. These totals do not establish the individual benefits of the mayor, each councilmember, or the treasurer. We will publish individual figures only when verified.

Schedules, attendance and time off
Elected councilmembers do not generally work the same fixed office hours or follow the same supervisor-approved vacation process as city staff. They set much of their own constituent and preparation schedules, but they remain subject to public-meeting attendance, disclosure, ethics and other legal duties. It would be inaccurate to claim that every elected official can miss required meetings or abandon statutory responsibilities without consequences.
Regular City Council meetings are generally the first and third Mondays at 6:30 p.m., subject to changes and posted notices. Check the city meeting schedule ↗.
How to run for city office
